Arduino Software IDE Installation

Arduino Software IDE Installation

This document explains how to install the Arduino Software (IDE) on both Windows and MacOS Machines

Introduction

In order to upload and communicate with your Tech-Box.io microcontroller, or any other controller compatible with the Arduino ecosystem, you will need to install the Arduino Software IDE version 1.8.X. This guide covers the installation process for a Windows 7 / 10 PC and MacOS.

(Note: To successfully install the driver software, you may need to obtain administrative privileges from your IT administrator if your computer is controlled on a domain, such as in a workplace or school system).

Windows 7 / 10

Step 1:

Get the latest version of the software IDE from the Arduino download page shown below. You will need to scroll down the page to the version 1.8.X section before downloading (version 2.X still has stability problems which are causing other users issues). You can choose between an installer (.exe) and a Zip package when downloading. We recommend the use of the installer (.exe) file, which appears as "Windows Win 7 and newer" in the image below, as this does not require additional driver installations to be done separately (excluding the CH340 driver which will be covered in each applicable kit's guide).

When downloading the Arduino IDE, you will likely see a page that asks you to support Arduino IDE. Donating is not necessary to download and use the Arduino IDE, but please feel free to support this amazing open source project. If you do not desire to donate, click "Just Download" to proceed with the download process.

Step 2:

When the download finishes, locate the file (typically in the Downloads folder) and double-click it to run the executable (.exe) file. We recommend to make sure that all components are selected to install, as shown in the image below. Click "Next" to proceed with the installation. If you are prompted to install additional device software, such as Adafruit Drivers, Arduino USB Drivers, or other drivers from Adafruit Industries, Arduino SRL or Arduino LLC, be sure to click "Install" to accept those installations. If you receive an additional warning or if Administrator's Permission is required during the installation, be sure to allow the driver installation processes by clicking either "Yes" or "Allow"

Step 3:

Choose the default installation directory as shown below. We recommend keeping the default directory, but you can change it by selecting "Browse..." and navigating to the desired new directory.

Step 4:

Once the installation extracts and installs all of the required files, the Arduino IDE installation will be complete! While installing, the installer's window should appear like the image below.

Step 5:

Once the Arduino Software IDE is successfully installed you can open the Arduino IDE and begin programming and customizing your Tech-Box.io kit!

MacOS

Step 1:

Use the Safari browser throughout this installation process. Get the latest legacy version of the software IDE version 1.8.X from the Arduino download page. You will need to scroll down the page to version 1.8.X section to download (version 2.X still has stability problems which are causing other users issues). Be sure to download the "Mac OS X" version from the download menu, as shown in the image below. This will download a .Zip file which Safari will automatically extract for you in your Mac's "Downloads" folder. If you do not use the Safari browser, you may have to complete the extraction process manually.

Step 2:

When the download finishes, locate the Arduino file in your Downloads folder in Finder. Then click and drag the Arduino application into the Applications folder in Finder, as highlighted by the arrow in the image below. Once the Arduino application is in the Applications folder, launch the Arduino IDE by double-clicking the file in the Applications folder or through Launchpad. If prompted with "Arduino is an app downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?", click "Open" to proceed.

The Arduino Software IDE should be successfully installed on your Mac! Now you can begin programming and customizing your Tech-Box.io kit! (Note: If the Arduino IDE requests access to the folder where the Tech-Box.io Arduino file is stored, allow the request or you may encounter errors).

If you have any issues with the installation, please contact Support@tech-box.io
